HYBRID HEATING THE PRACTICAL BRIDGE TO A LOWER-CARBON FUTURE

Andrea Carmeli argues that hybrid heating systems offer the most practical and immediate way to cut carbon emissions in UK homes.

Decarbonising UK home heating is one of the most complex challenges facing the industry – and current policy does not acknowledge the reality of the situation. Despite significant investment in promoting heat pump adoption, the barriers remain considerable: high upfront costs, installation disruption, and properties simply not suited to full electrification.

The numbers reflect this position. Approximately 1.5 million boilers are installed in UK homes every year, yet there are fewer than 100,000 heat pump installations annually. In the vast majority of cases, engineers are still fitting like-for-like boiler replacements.

How hybrid systems deliver real-world results

The question is not whether we need to change – it’s how we get there. Hybrid systems offer a realistic option. A hybrid heating system pairs an air source heat pump with a gas boiler, using smart controls to switch between the two depending on which fuel is most cost-effective at that moment. This maximises carbon savings while helping reduce running costs – without asking homeowners to make a leap they may not be ready for.

For many older properties, moving straight to a standalone heat pump can involve larger radiators, additional pipework or finding space for a hot water cylinder. Hybrids are less disruptive to install and offer a more familiar experience for both engineer and homeowner. That familiarity matters – it reduces resistance and increases the likelihood of uptake.

The long-term cost of doing nothing differently

When a homeowner’s boiler fails, the simplest option is a straight replacement. It’s understandable – but it is also a missed opportunity.

A boiler installed today will typically still be operating in 2040 or beyond – a period when pressure to decarbonise will only intensify. Continuing like-for-like replacements creates a future pinch point where millions of households will need to move directly from a traditional gas boiler to a fully electric system with little preparation.

Hybrid systems offer the ideal solution. Introducing heat pump technology now via a hybrid solution means homeowners can begin cutting emissions immediately while building confidence in how the system works.

When the time comes to move to a full heat pump, it becomes a far smaller step. For engineers, hybrids allow them to extend existing skills while broadening the range of solutions they can offer.

Policy is holding back progress

One of the most significant barriers to wider hybrid adoption is the exclusion of these systems from current government incentive schemes – a position that many across the industry have criticised as short-sighted.

Mike Foster, Chief Executive of the Energy and Utilities Alliance, has described current heating policy as “misguided and costly”, arguing that hybrids working alongside gas boilers could deliver faster carbon reductions than a heat-pump-only approach.

He made those comments at the launch of a policy paper from Hybrid Heating Great Britain, which found that hybrid systems could cut household carbon emissions by up to 70% immediately.

The research also showed hybrids have the ability to reduce energy bills by 16% compared with gas boilers. Consumer demand tells a similar story. Survey data shows that some two-thirds of homeowners believe hybrid heating should qualify for government grants – a clear signal that policy is lagging behind public opinion.

A proven model in Europe

The UK is not navigating this alone. Across Europe, countries including the Netherlands and Italy have adopted hybrid heating as part of a gradual shift, backed by government incentives and industry investment.

Our parent company, Immergas, is headquartered in Italy where hybrids are mainstream – demonstrating what a well-supported transition looks like. The UK market will follow a similar path; the question is whether policy leads that shift or continues to lag behind it.

The commercial case for engineers

For heating engineers, hybrids offer a significant commercial opportunity. While a complete switch to heat pump installations is not yet realistic for every engineer or every property on the UK market, hybrids can offer a practical middle ground. Engineers can gain valuable experience with heat pump technology while continuing to work within a familiar commercial model – and a business that offers hybrid solutions positions itself as a forward-thinking partner for customers already thinking about their long-term heating options.

Why hybrids make sense now

Hybrid heating will not be the final destination for every home – but for millions of UK households it represents the technology they are actually ready for.

The UK’s net zero ambitions will not be delivered through a single piece of technology or policy. They will be built on practical decisions made by engineers and homeowners using the options available to them. Hybrid systems are one of those options – and right now, one of the most effective.
